Why it Matters:

As Tesla vehicles become more common, first responders need to know how to safely handle them in emergencies. As a Tesla owner you can help us provide this important community service by bringing your Tesla to the workshop as a member of the Crash Course Crew.

Details:

DVTOC created "Tesla Crash Course" to give first responders education and hands-on experience with Tesla vehicles. The workshop includes a presentation with Q&A where first responders (police, fire, EMT, dispatchers) learn critical details like door handle operation, high voltage cable and cut loop locations, and much more, followed by a show and tell demo. That’s the part where you get involved by showing your car and teaching the participants how to operate it and where to find things.

NOTE: If you register, we’re counting on your vehicle.
If something urgent prevents you from attending as planned, let us know as soon as possible so we can try to find a replacement for your model.

FAQ

What are the benefits of participating?

  • TWO free months of DVTOC club membership at their existing membership level. Free tier members will get two months of Standard membership. You must pre-register and attend the workshop to receive this benefit.
  • T-shirt with Crash Course logo after participation in 2 workshops.
  • 11x17 laminated emergency response guide to keep for future workshops.
  • Food will be provided during the workshop. Optional club lunch after workshop.
  • Gain useful knowledge about handling a Tesla in emergency situations.
  • By volunteering for Crash Course you are helping providing crucial exposure to first responders and service to our community is an important part of DVTOC’s mission.

What does participation entail?

  • Register with the model you will bring. Join waitlist if all slots are full. We’ll reach out by email if a spot opens up.
  • First timers are recommended to attend presentation (see timing below).
  • After the Q&A, participants go out to the parked cars (either indoors, often in a fire station or outdoors in nearby parking lot) where your role will be to interact with the first responders and show them your Tesla vehicle and answer questions.
  • During the hands-on demo you will point out things like how to open doors, operate the vehicle, use the key card, etc. Remember, they may need to move an operational vehicle off the road.
  • Depending on the schedule, sometimes Crash Crew members may go out to lunch afterwards, if not provided on site.

Do I need any specialized knowledge or experience?

  • No, but you should be comfortable with the operation and features of your vehicle and willing to review the relevant first responder guide.
  • Links and instructions will be provided in advance to review.
  • If it is your first time, try to attend the presentation to learn the material we cover.

What time should I arrive and how long will it last?

  • The full workshop is expected to last about about 3-4 hours depending on how many attendees there are and the level of interest and any planned demonstrations. About 2 hours of it is in the classroom with a break in the middle.
  • To attend the presentation, arrive at least 15 minutes before the workshop start time to park your car with the Teslas.
  • Arriving on time or early is most important when the vehicle portion will be inside a fire station (winter and if it is rainy) since the doors may be locked during the presentation.
  • If you have attended prior workshops, you can arrive up to 1-2 hours after the designated start time for the hands on portion.
  • If you arrive late, park near the other Teslas if possible and join us inside for the remainder of the classroom part.

What should I wear?

  • Crash Course T-shirt, DVTO Club T-shirt, official Tesla T-shirt, or first responder shirt recommended.
  • The hands-on portion may be outdoors, wear weather appropriate clothing or layers.

What is the plan in case of inclement weather?

  • The event is rain or shine. We try to have a backup covered or indoor location in case of rain.
  • If there is a change due to weather, on the day of the event we will communicate any changes by email and on the #First-Responder-Classes channel on Discord.
  • For locations where the hands-on demo is indoors (cold or rainy weather), not all vehicles that register may fit inside the fire station. In this case, we will try to have at least one of each model indoors. Everyone else can still participate by sharing vehicles.
